Mission:
Midnight
Location: Captains Office
Starbase Frontier's new security chief had just come aboard, and after being shown to her quarters to drop her things off, the young blonde woman began the process of getting settled in; first on her list was reporting in to the station's commander. Who it was, Jane hadn't been told, something she boiled down to her being assigned to a backwater outpost.
The Lieutenant had a spring in her step as she made her way to Ops and the commander's office, singing an old blues tune as she walked.
"A-come on, a-baby, don't you wanna go... A-come on, a-baby, don't you wanna go..."
Kagami looked up from her desk at the sound of the singing. "Who could possibly be singing at a time like this?" she grumbled.
Kagami's question was answered by the chime to her office ringing. Someone was here to see her.
"Fantastic..." Kagami sighed. "Come in already!" she called out.
The doors snapped open and in stepped Jane, beaming from ear to ear as she straightened out her uniform.
"Lieutenant Joliet Jane Cooke, reporting for duty as ordered, ma'am." She said. "I've been furnished as your new chief of security."
The way the young Lieutenant seemed unable to stand still despite doing so suggested that she was more than a little excited by the prospect of working with Kagami.
Kagami looked at the young woman, studying her up and down several times. "I've met you before somewhere haven't I?" she said. "Yes... You were that over enthuastic officer on Risa when I attended Captain Aisaka's wedding there... What in the world are you doing here?"
Jane laughed.
"Well, long story short- I got stuck on an amusement park ride that trip, and by the time I was finally rescued, I had apparently already been rescued, if that makes sense?" She explained. "So, that means now there's somebody else running around as Patricia, which leaves little old me to try and make sense of it all. I don't know, maybe they figured that if they shipped me off to some backwater station that I'd fade into obscurity."
Jane rocked back on her heels.
"But, I'm sure Kagami Izumi of all people won't let that happen." She added with a wink.
"No... that made no sense at all..." Kagami replied. "How about instead of taling in riddles, you tell me exactly what happened and exactly who I am getting here."
"So, you want me to spell it out for you..." Jane mumbled under her breath. "Transporter accident. Transporter duplicate, transporter clone, whatever you want to call it. Think Thomas Riker if you need an example."
"So Starfleet sends you all the way over here to me?" Kagami asked.
"Yes." Jane nodded. "Actually, they didn't bother telling me who it was they were sending me to... Maybe my admiration isn't all that subtle after all. I mean, I feel like I'm practically jumping out of my skin right now, I'm so excited."
Kagami simply ran a hand over her forehead. "You have far too much energy at the moment." She said to her with a sigh. "Look, no one on this damn base seemed to sleep at all last night. We're all a little... knackered. And some of us..." she indicated to herself. "Aren't exactly the friendliest of people to be around at the moment." She stated. "So, do me a favour and chill the hell out or get out."
"Well, I guess I'm gonna go, then..." Jane muttered. "Because right now, I'm wound up tighter than a coil, and I've felt that way ever since I stepped foot on this station. Tell you what, I'll give you your space for now, and when you decide there's some kind of connection between me being abnormally hyper and the reason you didn't sleep last night... You'll know where to find me."
Jane wasn't wrong: She still had the rest of the new arrival checklist to complete; go in for her examination, go over her predecessor's records... Maybe even rearrange the furniture in her new office?
"Wait a second!" Kagami called out. "Sorry, I get cranky when I'm tired." She stated. "We've got a first contact situation currently ongoing. We're going to need your expertise in security. We've been managing so far, but all this 'not being able to sleep' crap only started when our guests arrived."
"Okay." Jane nodded. "So, first contact situation... Possibly related to station-wide sleep deprivation. What do we know about our guests?"
"Not a lot. It seems they recently achieved warp drive and we happen to be the first other people they found. They seem eager to trade and establish peaceful relations though." Kagami said stifling a yawn.
"So, really recent?" Jane noted. "Have they said anything on who they are? Like their species or anything like that?"
Kagami shook her head. "They've shown us the location of their home planet. Its about eighty lightyears from here, so they've travelled quite a distance to meet us."
"Did they at least mention what they called their home planet?" Jane pressed further. If she at least had a planet name, she could do some investigating into what they called themselves from there.
"Their planet is simple called Sonno." Kagami stated. "Anything else you want to know?"
"Well, at least I got a starting point." Jane breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, a lead! "I'll have to do some investigating from there... If I am dismissed?"
"Be careful. I've been told that tensions and tempers are high. With no one sleeping it seems everyone is getting a little... edgy." Kagami said. "But yeah sure, dismissed."
Jane merely nodded before pivoting on her heel and heading out of the office, seemingly going right back to singing:
"Ah, come on..." She began as she stepped through the doors.
