1,282 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Midnight
Location: Station Commander's Office

ON:

Here's hoping I don't screw this up... And I hope Dad didn't have a hand in this... were the last words Joseph wrote in to his personal log. He preferred writing to speaking his log. It gave it more personality to him. And though the computer could translate it so it was legible. At first glance no one would be able to read it in his hand writing. On his shoulder he carried his duffel bag, the other arm carrying another plasticine duffel that held more important stuff that shouldn't be at risk of being damaged. He took a deep breath as he rode the turbolift from deck 22, docking port 5, where he had departed the U.S.S. Prophet. It had been his ride from Earth, where he had been spending the last couple of years taking care of family things and just relaxing. He tapped his foot lightly as the turbolift carried him to deck 2.

Once the lift arrived, he stepped off and looked around for a moment before recognizing the double doors of the Commanding Officer's office. He looked to the others on the Operations deck before he started to make his way to the doors. He stood there for a moment before he tapped the little display on the side, activating the chime inside the office to alert Captain Izumi that there was someone waiting to see her. He straightened his uniform top, one that was freshly replicated barely thirty minutes ago, along with the new set of pips on his shoulder. They were lighter, being one less, but he was happy. It meant he earned it, it wasn't given to him by his parents.

"Enter," a voice called from behind the door. It was a sharp feminine tone that came with a sense of authority.

Joseph quickly entered the office the moment the doors wooshed their way open. He stepped to her desk quickly, stopping just short at attention. He spoke “Lieutenant Joseph Frost, reporting for duty ma’am.” His eyes locking on to her, his tail squirming a bit under his uniform, his nerves kicking in now.

The purple haired captain looked him up and down with her bright blue eyes. "At ease." She said indicating for him to sit down with a hand. A silver tray was on her desk with a hot steaming coffee pot on it. There was also two silver mugs. "Coffee?" She asked as she picked up the pot.

Joseph bent and set both of his duffels down before looking to the pot. He looked to the Captain before he spoke “yes please. Thank you Captain.” Before he stood back up so she didn’t have to try and hand him the mug. He added a couple of cubes of sugar and a bit of milk to it, seeing as they were there on the platter.

"So, tell me why you're here?" Kagami asked simply as she took a sip of her coffee.

He looked to the Captain, taking a sip for a moment so he could gather his thoughts. Finally he spoke "Well, ma'am, your starbase is at a very edge of the frontier. I wanted to be apart of exploring a new area while defending my fellow crew. But the other is.." He hesitated for a moment.

"Is...?" Kagami asked.

He let out a light sigh before he spoke “I wanted to get away from my parents influences. Admirals Frost and Phaserman-Frost…” his shirt seemed to shift as his tail tried to flail a bit. “They have always tried to get me the best of everything. I don’t feel like I deserve a lot so.. To get this position on my own merits…” he gave a sheepish smile “it feels good..”

"Well, we're on the very edge of the unknown out here." Kagami explained. She pointed to the office windows. "Out there is the unknown and we're the gateway to both The Federation and Klingon Empire." She told him. "Now, this is a new base. So our Starfighters are yet to arrive, along with your pilots. They're due in about six days."

"So, you have six days to familiarise yourself with the base and set up your department." Kagami told him as she poured more coffee.

Joseph nodded as he took a sip of his coffee. He sat up a bit straighter and spoke “Understood ma’am. I was looking at the deck layout of the starbase on my way here. I didn’t see a listing for starfighter bays. Am I to assume we will be taking over one of the standard shuttlebays and maintenance floors?”

"Ah, thats because the starfighter bays are yet to be completed." Kagami explained. "They're adjacent to the shuttlebays, just empty space at the moment. However the Corps of engineers are due to be fitting them out this week."

He gave a nod to the Captain's explanation. He sipped at his coffee for a moment before he spoke "Then I will probably help them out where I can. I assume that you have service records for the pilots coming? I will need to figure out my XO and squad leaders."

Kagami shuffled around some of the PADDs on her desk before finally selecting one. "Here, all upcoming pilots and their records. You'll have a mix of Starfleet and Klingon Personnel too. As you should already know, this base is jointly operated by Starfleet and the Klingon Defence Force."

Joseph set his cup down before leaning forward to take to PADD that the Captain offered. He nodded his head and spoke "I had gathered as much. Suppose I need to brush up on my Klingonese and etiquette." He grinned a bit as he looked to the Captain "I promise to do my best to not get in to any death duels."

"That I would advise against," Kagami said. "You should spend the rest of the day taking a good look around. This is a big place, not as nog as a stardock, but still bigger than any Starship."

Joseph gave a nod and spoke "Any recommendations then, ma'am?" His voice questioning and almost naive.

"Check out the Galleria. There's plenty of shops and restaurants to sample." Kagami suggested.

With a nod, he picked up the cup, finishing the dregs of his coffee. He set it down on the tray before he stood and spoke "Permission to go and unpack ma'am?"

Kagami nodded. "Granted. But don't count on sleep..." she sighed. "The visiting Aliens, The Sonno seem to be accidently preventing us all from falling asleep."

Joseph tilted his head a bit "Really?" He spoke softly "That new First Contact species? How is it done? Pheromones? Telepathically?"

"We believe that its some sort of pheromone. They don't seem aware of its effects on us. But, we're organising trade relations. Luckily they're due to depart soon and we can sll get some sleep..." She replied stifling a yawn.

Joseph gave a soft nod of his head, his ears flapping just a tiny bit. The thoughtful look on his face made him look almost kitten like. Finally he spoke "Well if they are departing soon, then I suppose I can deal with a sleepless night. I don't have to fly so that is a good thing." He grinned.

"Indeed." Kagami said. "If theres nothing else?"

He stooped down and picked up his duffels. Gently he spoke "no ma'am. I hope you can rest soon." He nodded his head to her before he made his way out of her office and to the closest lift that would take him to his quarters.
